Oh little piggie...

Should we get a little pig, soft and sweet, porky meat... We won't eat that little pig but we'll watch him grow real big.  Will the wildlife all around leave pig alone or take him off the ground?  I'll decide in about an hour, later, later, after a shower.  Winter is coming, snow too, will little piggy wear winter shoes? Will he be content at home in the chicken house all alone?! Won't he wish he was home with mum? He'll eat leftovers and cat food, he'll be hungry and fed real good.  We'll walk him around the yard, make an obstacle course and then reward.  What will little piggie's name be...? Harry, Burtie or just Bacon?

FLIP SIDE

There's another world under here
Between the sheets
Blue and deep
Hills and valleys
Puddles and pools
Follow the line
Swim hard and go deep
My sweet
Foot traffic feels good
Lips lock and should
Now go deep my sweet
It's our world
We don't need air
We're swimming
So go deep
My sweet
It's our watery retreat
ZIG ZAG

Zig zag
Up for air
Zig zag
No fear
Flash mob
No ones hear
Just you and me dear
Don't stop it's sweet
Hold tight
It's a dream
We were hungry
So we ate
Stuffed full
Licked the plate

--Party!!

It's all been said before, but it's the perspective that makes all the difference... Sometimes we meet people who for one small reason or another make a big difference in our lives.  I met someone who although seemed insipid at the time, ended up being an irrational force in my life.  So we find ourselves weaving through a myriad of puzzling maizes....we are dying or so we thought and then Wam, we get hit by a force so natural, so inviting, so comfortable we can only hope this means something.  Anything.    I don't walk around waiting for such instances, as a matter of fact I live in a constant state of contented ness so much so that it scares me.  I am happy with my choices and happy with my growth.  But as human nature would have it, I think we all find ourselves occasionally at a crossroads.  One where the stop sign screams stop but the black and white arrow points ahead.  What to do..... What to do???  Stay the course, frame the shot and take the picture.  It's not an answer, but it's a choice.  It is very painful to get to the ultimate shot but maybe it's the search in getting there that really matters.

Driving#Eyesopen#pics

I don't know about you but when I'm driving along and see something that catches my eye, I want to stop immediately and get that picture.  Along with this need for instant gratification might come an alarming bit of radical driving.... All I'm saying is that when I stop in the middle of the road (due to no turn-off or berm), I am merely taking the chance that no car will rear-end me or vise-versa.  That said, funky turn arounds and radical road run-offs can lead to:   A.  muddy wheels and tires   B. scaring the wildlife  C. auto wreckage
D. a traffic citation or  E.  possibly the most idealistic photo one has ever thought of taking! The latter being a dream.  Yesterday for instance, I was caught at one hell of a spot.  Cars were zooming past the T intersection as I approached.  The farmer and tractor I wished to catch on camera were behind and to the right of me.  I could not pull out and stop in traffic and I could not reverse.  So what does one do in this defining moment?  Put the window down, point and shoot... Yes, while driving!  Now I know this photo most likely won't be salvageable.  But I guess the point is:  Devotion!  Love!  Rapture! And a little bit of crazy.

Cheers!

Ants and Blooms

Turns out our Grandmother's Peony flowers need a little coaxing from Mother Nature and ANTS!  So this year as I peruse through my landscape, I have been finding ant hills too close to the house.  I'm certainly not an ANT hater.  It's just that when the little guys make their way onto ones feet and legs and start biting... I want reform.  They've marched through snow and mud to stay alive, I'm not going to spray them.  But one thing we can do is move them to those Peony plants.  That's right folks, those beautiful blooms wouldn't bloom as early without the help of those ants!  The ants actually eat the wax off of the blooms which helps the bud open.  Ants are also known to enjoy the nectar.  Some people will argue with these statements and so be it.  I haven't been alive 200 years but I have seen ants on my peonies for many years running.  Check it out and enjoy those beautiful Blooms!

Getting the "light" in your pictures

As we all know, taking photos of family and friends has become common place among all of us old and young.  We can use our phones, cameras, ipads and ipods.  The choice is endless.  BUT finding the right spot of light will enhance your pictures beyond compare.  Try taking pics in the am for ultimate light exposure.  Also when the sun is setting in the evening can have dazzling effects on your subject.  I don't own any filters yet, so finding natural light and wondrous objects is very important.  Get outside and find the light!

Chickens in the Spring

Keeping our Spring Hens Safe....

For those of you who enjoy looking out your window and seeing chickens peck the ground for spring worms and bugs, it's really hard to let go of the birds and not get a fresh batch each spring.  There are a few questions I've had to ask myself in recent years about this very thing.  When predators come a knocking on the chicken house door, the blood shed can make us weary of keeping those precious birds.  We come to love tending, feeding, and collecting the eggs from our feather friends.  We do everything we can to secure their coop and hope for the best.... I recently felt as though I couldn't stand to lose one more bird.  So, I posted the hens on a local site and sold them a few days after Christmas.  I got a great price for each hen and when the heavy snow hit our South Eastern Pa belt, I felt relieved that my duties as chicken mother were over. (For the time being) Now I know one thing is for sure.  If we don't get our chicken coop door closed by dark during spring and summer seasons we can count on an invasion of many predators.  We've had skunks, racoons, possum, fox and even a great horned owl in the chicken house.  These predators will play, eat, drag off and leave remains of any and all birds eventually. I havn't invested in a "nature cam" or an automated coop door, but these options could help with protection.  I recently found bottled "Wolf Urine" for sale on My Pet Chicken.  This brings a whole new concept into question....will it attract wolves? mypetchicken.com
I think it is hard to stop the chicken habit once it starts.  I suggest taking a 3-6 month break from the birds if you are having a predator problem and then revisit your coop for possible entrances making sure to secure any problem areas.  Also, make sure to properly clean up any dead birds.  Once your area has been free of any food for the animals they will likely travel somewhere else for dinner.  Also, make that trip home during the warm months to ensure your flock is locked in tight at to keep them safe.
